When compared to the standard application of existing downtown revitalization initiatives, the Main Street Middlesex Program is an original variation and the very first of its kind in Canada. What renders it so different and so effective is its unique solution for empowering small rural communities. Begun as a trial idea in the County of Middlesex, it soon successfully accomplished its desired goal via its new county-wide concept. With initial funding support from partners including the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Industry Canada/FedNor and the County of Middlesex, this exciting initiative allows historic commercial areas throughout Middlesex County access to supports and resources.
When participating communities within the county were encouraged to make use of their advantages such as, land area and large number of small communities, the single, cohesive county wide entity was able to compete very successfully against their greatest local competitor, the City of London. In 2007-2008, the new “Main Street Award of Excellence” was introduced recognizing the very best work in promoting the four pillars of the Main Street Program: organization; promotion; design; and economic restructuring. The program has instituted a series of grants provided to the communities of Middlesex County to encourage further enhancement and has been incredibly successful in developing recruitment and business development programs for the downtowns of Middlesex County.
Becoming highly visible was the greatest impact for all of the small rural communities within Middlesex County, previously overlooked by shoppers and tourists. The resulting benefits have been a remarkable increase in the number of shoppers and tourists alike, an exciting revival in community spirit and pride and a growing list of residents wanting to volunteer and get involved with the program.
