BROCKVILLE, Ontario, June 29, 2007 — Leeds–Grenville MP Gord Brown, on behalf of the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Minister for FedNor, today announced a federal two-year contribution of $590,000 to the local Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC), known as the 1000 Islands Community Development Corporation, in support of its continued operations over the next two years.

“Canada’s New Government is getting things done for the families and taxpayers in and around the 1000 Islands,” stated Mr. Brown.  “Our investment of $590,000 will allow this Community Futures Development Corporation to continue to develop new industry, create job opportunities for youth and foster the growth of local businesses.”

Budget 2007, announced by Canada’s New Government in March, introduces a number of key initiatives in support of the small business sector, including:

  • reducing the federal paper burden on small business
  • reducing the tax compliance burden on small business
  • introducing tax reductions which will lower Canada’s tax rate on new business investment

CFDCs provide services to support local economic development and small business growth, including:  access to capital; business services; community-based projects; and strategic community planning and socio-economic development.

Over the last year, the 1000 Islands Community Development Corporation invested $707,333 in small and medium-sized businesses in the region, resulting in the creation or maintenance of 162 full and part-time jobs, and contributing to an enhanced business community.

“This long-term funding gives us the ability to continue to serve the citizens and businesses of this region,” said Lawrence Fielding, Chair of the 1000 Islands Community Development Corporation.  “We are grateful for the confidence the Government of Canada is showing in our work.”

The 1000 Islands Community Development Corporation is one of 61 CFDCs in rural and Northern Ontario funded by FedNor’s Community Futures Program.
