THUNDER BAY, Ontario, June 20, 2008 — The Government of Canada is committed to helping diversify the economy of Northwestern Ontario by investing in business development, information and communications technology, innovation, community economic development and youth initiatives.

The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Minister for FedNor, was joined today by the Honourable Joe Comuzzi, MP for Thunder Bay–Superior North, in Thunder Bay to announce a FedNor investment of more than $7.3 million in Northwestern Ontario.  The funding will support 32 initiatives in the Kenora, Thunder Bay—Rainy River and Thunder Bay—Superior North regions.

“Investing in small business initiatives, research and innovation, economic development and job creation will help build a stronger future for residents and businesses in the Northwest,” said Minister Clement.  “The Government of Canada is committed to building strong, self-reliant communities in Northern Ontario.”

“This announcement clearly demonstrates our government’s support for Northwestern Ontario,” added Mr. Comuzzi.  “I am pleased that FedNor can play an important role in helping to diversify the regional economy.”

As reaffirmed in Budget 2008, the Government of Canada is making investments in people, knowledge, modern infrastructure and a sound and efficient financial sector to provide the foundation for local people and companies to succeed locally and in the global economy.

In addition to supporting six Community Futures Development Corporations, FedNor funding will be used to assist with broadband initiatives, telecommunication and information technologies, regional farming opportunities, health research, revitalizing Kenora’s waterfront and FedNor’s Youth Internship Program.

By supporting Northwestern Ontario through its programs and services, FedNor is opening doors and building futures for a prosperous Northern Ontario.
