Government of Canada helping small businesses innovateCanadian small businesses invited to develop innovative solutions to two new challenges OTTAWA, May 8, 2019 /CNW/ - As the single largest purchaser of goods and services, the federal government is using procurement to help Canadian small businesses succeed. Through the Innovative Solutions Canada (ISC) program, government departments are inviting small businesses to come up with a new innovative product, service or solution in answer to specific challenges they face. Winning small businesses may receive up to $150,000 to refine their research and development and, if accepted into Phase 2, receive up to $1 million to develop a working prototype. The government can then act as a first customer, helping small businesses to commercialize their innovations, scale up their business and create good middle-class jobs across Canada.

News from the ONN: Top ThreeThe top three things that are or will be affecting your community: 1) Bracing for the budget impact: This year’s provincial budget may require organizations to make some hard decisions. It’s important to make informed decisions before acting, and consider the impact on staff, leadership, and community. Read more in this important update from the law firm Carters Professional Corporation. 2) Ontario's community wealth building movementis growing:More and more communities are addressing the wealth leaking out of their local economies by trying out community wealth building strategies, like community land trusts, community finance, anchor institutions, and cooperative, nonprofit, and other locally-owned enterprises. You can see examples of community initiatives in action on our website. 3) Navigating changes to employment and training: Like the health care and child care sectors, Employment Ontario programs are undergoing a massive shift as the Province engages new “service system managers” - nonprofit, public, or private sector - to manage local delivery of employment and training programs. Beginning Fall 2019, the new employment services model will launch in the Regions of Peel, Hamilton-Niagara and Muskoka-Kawarthas.
Immigration Matters InnitiativeThe business sector in Canada employs more than 12 million people. Entrepreneurs are a very important part of the business sector and the Canadian economy as a whole. More than 2.7 million Canadians are self-employed, and more than 800,000 of them have paid employees. These entrepreneurs ensure there’s competition and consumer choice for products and services in communities large and small from coast to coast to coast. As we look to the future, immigrant entrepreneurs and business leaders will have an important role to play ensuring we have a growing and successful economy. “Canada has an opportunity to be a country where the best talent from around the world can move here and do their life’s work as never before.” ~Alexandra Clark, Chief of Staff to the Chief Executive Officer, Shopify
